There are many people who have issues with speaking to an audience and can use some public speaking tips. You may be one of them. If you are, perhaps you are simply afraid of looking like a fool in front of people. You can overcome your fear of public speaking by trying to be thoroughly prepared with a positive attitude.
As for the reasons why people are afraid it can range from being worried about the way that you look or the things that you will say, but it usually stems from having a low self-esteem. If you can improve the way that you feel about yourself, you’ll be able to work on the way that you see yourself and gradually - you’ll notice that your fear will diminish.
However, there are some people who are so afraid of being judged that they will literally get sick. There are some who will get nauseous or sick. They may even faint from the pressure to perform. There are some people who will begin to stutter or speak too rapidly. Sometimes when they start talking, their heart will begin to beat so fast that they may tremble and shake. Although you may find yourself calming down after awhile, you may end up wasting half the speech trying to get over your fear.
You can learn to overcome your fear of public speaking, rather than working to get over it every time. You will want to make sure that you go into the speech well prepared. Visualize the way that you will deliver your speech and note how much time it takes you to deliver it. When you go into the room knowing that your speech is only 12 minutes and 34 seconds, the time will pass more quickly. You will also want to make sure that you are well educated on your topic. Make sure that you are prepared for every possible question and even for your fears. You will find that when you feel you are prepared for anything, you’ll project a lot more confidence.
If you are afraid that public speaking may make you look foolish, you have to think about why you feel that way. Does your audience have power over you? If you make a mistake, who will care? If it doesn’t hurt you or if it doesn’t hurt your job, then why should you feel so afraid about making a mistake? You will want to think about that the next time you think about someone’s opinion of you. At the end of the day, no one’s opinion really matters but your own. I hope you remember these public speaking tips the next time your facing your fear of public speaking.
