As you are probably aware, you can find a lot of great people online. There are lots of people who have been lucky enough to find old friends, make new friends and enter into romantic relationships
online too. You could potentially find millions of interesting people who may want to meet; however, you must consider your safety before you go out on a date. There are also a lot of bad people who are online looking for someone they can take advantage of and some of them are sexual predators.
First, you need to trust your gut feeling. If you feel uneasy about this person for some reason, even though they seem to be nice, you may want to slow the relationship down or even end things before the relationship really gets too serious. Many people will get a feeling that something is wrong - you should trust your gut feeling.
Secondly, you will not want to provide any of your personal information too soon. You will want to make sure that you don’t get too attached too quickly - you could end up getting yourself in a lot of trouble. It only takes a few bits of information to find out where someone is. You don’t want to put yourself in such a precarious position.
Tip: Consider doing a search on Google for any information you plan to provide - before you provide it. Make sure that you’re protecting your privacy until you’ve established some trust.
Thirdly, you should use a free email account (gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc.). This will allow you to become relatively untraceable. You will then want to make sure that you don’t give all the information that is asked for, only what it really needed; for instance, you don’t want to put your full name or full contact information. Just make sure that you give enough information to register.
You will also want to make sure that you use a cell phone or even a number that is blocked when it comes to talking to them. They can easily track down your home or work from a phone number.
Keep in mind that there are a lot of people who will abuse the system. Even someone who seems like a nice guy or a nice girl can turn out to be a nightmare. You just need to make sure that you are making the right choice, and it takes time to build trust. Be leary of anyone who tries to rush things - this can be a red flag.
Stand back and look at whether or not this is a nice place to start a friendship - you may be able to prevent yourself from being a victim of an online predator. You may think that it’s weird for someone to go through the whole online process just to hurt someone, but the thing is that there are people who will. You do not want to test these types of people. You never know who may end up being an internet predator. So - be careful.
