Big Screen Plasma TV - Easy on the Eyes, not so much on the wallet…

Touted as the world’s biggest Plasma TV to date - now that’s what I’m talking about…

Wow - the screen alone weighs 458 lbs. and the stand weighs in at an additional 250 lbs. Now, when it comes to LCD vs Plasma TV technology - LCD displays don’t come anywhere near that size, so if bigger is better - a Plasma TV is going to be the way to go. If only budget wasn’t an issue…

The Technology of LCD vs Plasma TV

As a consumer, when I’m finally able to relax at home and watch a movie, I really just want to look at a big TV. I’m tired of my 31″ tube television and I’m ready to move into a wide screen HDTV. Hence, my own internal struggle with the pros and cons of LCD vs Plasma TV. Being somewhat of a geek - I can’t just rely on what the kid at Best Buy is telling me. This is an investment - I can’t just buy something because a salesperson is trying to make quota. I’ve got to get into the nitty-gritty of it - before I’m ready to part with my hard-earned cash.

I am driven to understand this technology - so I grilled a couple of sources over the weekend, and here’s some of what I’ve found out:

LCD technology - LCD stands for liquid crystal display. Digital watches, calculators and computer monitors use LCD to deliver the image to the viewer. A matrix of TFT’s (thin-film transistors) supply electrical current to liquid-crystal filled cells that are sandwiched between two sheets of glass. The crystals “untwist” when hit with the charge and filter out part of the spectrum. So LCD TV’s reproduce colors by way of subtraction - they block out part of the full spectrum of white light and allow only the “right” color to pass through for display.

Plasma technology - Plasma TV’s contain hundreds of thousands of individual pixel cells. These allow current from electrodes to excite rare natural gases - like neon and xenon - the charge causes them to glow and produce light. The trick here is getting the proper balance of red, green and/or blue phosphors from each cell. In a nutshell, each cell is a tiny florescent bulb that gets instructions from the software in the TV’s internal control board. This is a process of addition - adding or producing light. If you look closely, you can see the individual pixel cell coloration of red, green and blue. You can also see the tiny black lines that separate them.

Which is better - it’s really tough to say, it really depends on where you want to put it and what you plan to watch on it. Unfortunately, there’s no one right answer.

Cheers

The LCD vs Plasma TV Debate

I found a great video that helps explain some of the pros and cons of LCD vs Plasma technology.

In a nutshell, the two main questions are - where do you plan to put it and what are you going to watch on it?

In a bright room, lots of windows and/or bright lighting - LCD is a better choice; in darker rooms and for nighttime viewing - Plasma TV’s are typically better.

LCD sets work better for gaming and connecting to the computer, they are also less likely to suffer from the effects of screen burn-in.

Plasma TV’s work well for movies, sports and fast action. For the largest flat panels - you’ll have to go with Plasma.

Remember - you do get what you pay for, so budget accordingly as you learn about the pros and cons of LCD vs Plasma TV.

Buying a new TV - LCD vs Plasma TV

So - I’m looking into a flat panel TV for Christmas this year. I think I’m done with tube televisions - so it boils down to this: LCD vs Plasma TV and there are pros and cons for each choice.

There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding - here’s a few:

Location - a flat panel TV offers some flexibility because they can be located in places a tube television wouldn’t normally fit.

Viewing angle - It’s important to map out your viewing space, as the viewing angle may determine which technology will work better for you: LCD vs Plasma TV

Glare - You do have to be aware of glare from room and outside light sources. There are some features in both LCD and Plasma TV’s that can help reduce the effect of room glare.

Resolution - The clarity and sharpness of the image can have a huge impact on your viewing experience. Higher resolution sets will cost more, but are worth considering if you can find something that will work in to your budget.

Sensitivity - Both LCD and Plasma TV’s are sensitive to bumps, dust and spills.

I think one thing I’m going to need to know before too long is about the care and set-up of my new flat panel TV.

Update to this post (09-10-2007)

One thing I’ve been concerned about is how to take care of it once I get it.

There’s a lot to know, - like how to mount it, where’s the best place to put it, what should I do when I get it home?

So I’ve come up with a quick report you can download for free - right here:

TV Tips

I’ll keep researching and posting - I’ll let you know what I learn as I debate the pros and cons of LCD vs Plasma TV.

LCD vs. Plasma TV

This may seem early, but I’m on a mission this year. I’m looking into a flat panel television this year for Christmas. I have a problem though - I don’t know which is better: LCD vs Plasma TV.

I know, for many people school is going back into session - my kids just started today. But that means Halloween is just around the corner, then Thanksgiving and BAM - Christmas. I need to get this figured out and do it quick.

I talked to one of the salesmen at Best Buy the other day - and he helped me clear up a few things, but I’m still torn between the two. Which will win in the battle of LCD vs Plasma TV?

LCD technology is very different from Plasma - but the idea is to achieve similar results. People are gravitating toward bigger and bigger screens with higher definition. While it may seem simple - it’s not easy to choose between the two technologies. There are lots of pros and cons and this blog is my exploration into the subject.

Join me as I learn and share everything I find out while I’m deciding between LCD vs Plasma TV.
