A lot of people have tight finances. I know I’m looking for ways to lower my bills - especially my home heating bills. Maybe you are too. It’s important to consider what the extra costs of winter are going to do to you and to your budget. There are many ways that you can save on home heating oil prices and/or heating costs in general.
One thing you can do is prepare yourself throughout the year for winter. Home heating oil prices tend to be higher during the winter. Sometimes you can take the opportunity to purchase oil during the off-season and get a discount. The time that you really want to fill up is during the summer months. There isn’t as much demand for oil during these months.
Secondly, you can budget a little here and there out of your paychecks to save up for your winter fuel. By the time you order the oil or need to pay the utility bill, you will already have the money and not have to worry about it.
Thirdly, you may be able to get on a monthly or quarterly plan with the oil company. They will fill you up, during the season or off season, and just give you a tab. Some utility companies offer “comfort level billing.” They average your annual utility costs and you pay a consistent monthly amount. This can really help with your heating budget.
You may also want to consider the many ways that you can cut back on your need for heating this winter. If you learn how to budget for home heating oil prices and focus on how to save energy - you’ll find yourself saving money and saving energy at the same time.
Another thought - You may want to open an interest bearing savings account for heating expenses. You could even make some money off the money you set aside to cover rising home heating costs.
Every little bit counts as I look for ways to lower my bills. I hope these ideas are helpful to you…
