You need to make sure that you protect yourself, while at the same time - learning the net so that you can find new friends, learn new cultures, and use the tools of the net.
There are a lot of people who will make use of some of the Internet tools like instant messaging and chat rooms. They can always be good fun when it comes to the times where work is slow or when you are just bored at home. However, you need to make sure that you take the opportunity to learn how you can use these tools safely.
First, you will want to make sure that you do not give out any information that may lead to harm. This means that you don’t want to give someone your full name or a general idea of where you may live. You can say things like Aaron, from PA, however don’t say your full name and address because it can come back to haunt you.
There are many ways that you can give out some information without giving out specific information. You can answer the questions that you are asked, without naming specifics. You will find there are many things you can do to make friends, without finding or encouraging the predators.
Secondly, you have to approach everyone like they are a predator. You have to constantly be on your toes and never let your guard down. The minute that you allow others to get to you and to know things like your name and location, you are putting yourself in jeopardy of them hunting you down and maybe hurting you.
As a parent, it is very important that you teach your children about internet safety and keep the lines of communication open with them. You don’t want to give them any reason that may make them want to run to others for support and help. You don’t want to have anyone feel vulnerable. You need to make sure that you take into consideration that your child needs you and there are going to be times that you need to listen. This will make them less likely to go online and become a victim of a predator.
